Lavender Perfume

Walking through Provence (for example, near the Valensole Plateau) or, staying in Italy, in various areas of Tuscany (such as Santa Luce in the province of Siena), you can admire a marvelous landscape: vast fields of violet and blue lavender cover the hills, filling the air with their fresh, herbal, and floral scent. The purple plant that adorns so many Mediterranean landscapes has been cultivated for centuries, and its name was given by the ancient Romans. In Latin, "lavanda" is simply the gerund of the verb "to wash" meaning "that which must be washed," a linguistic testament to lavender’s use as an herb for cleansing and perfuming the body. Lavender’s association with cleanliness endures to this day: its scent, often found in Fragranced Laundry Detergents, conveys a sense of hygiene and harmony. Its essence often features in Clean Smelling Perfumes, perfumes that evoke a sense of cleanliness. Moreover, lavender is synonymous with serenity and calmness, thanks to its soothing properties. These qualities have made lavender one of the most beloved and widely used aromatic plants worldwide, whether in cookingcosmetics, or, of course, perfumery. Before delving into its role in perfumery, it’s important to highlight another vital role of this plant, undoubtedly the most significant from an ecological standpoint: lavender is a honey plant, meaning it allows bees to produce honey, thus contributing to the preservation of this crucial insect species for the balance of the environment

The Role of Lavender in Perfumery

While the use of lavender in perfumery was common in ancient times, it wasn’t until the 1900s that the plant became a true phenomenon, being cultivated, harvested, and distilled on an industrial scale, particularly in Grasse, the perfume capital located, coincidentally, in Provence. Over the 20th century, lavender’s fragrance became a staple for laundry, as its pure and fresh scent aligns perfectly with the idea of freshly laundered clothes. Yet, not everyone knows that during the distillation process, lavender smells completely different: lavender essence is obtained by subjecting the flowers to a process of steam distillation, and during this process, the scent is distinctly sharp and far from clean. Only after a few months does the lavender distillate develop its characteristic fresh, herbal, and floral scent. The chemical compound responsible for these notes is linalool, a molecule abundant in lavender (as well as in clary sage and bergamot), which gives it its fresh, clean aroma. Not just lavender, but also its hybrid, lavandin, is widely cultivated in Provence (indeed, it’s cultivated even more than lavender). Lavandin is a less refined and therefore less expensive variant, emitting a scent very similar to lavender (as it also contains large amounts of linalool), and it is primarily used in abundance for laundry fragrances. Thanks to its rich and complex aromatic profile, which ranges from herbal and fresh nuances to floral and balsamic notes, lavender is the foundation of many fragrances, especially Fougère Perfumes. Used to create balanced and sophisticated compositions, it’s often combined with citrus, spices, woods, and resins to add depth and character. Its ability to evoke images of endless fields under the Provence sun makes it ideal for timeless relaxing fragrances loved by both men and women.
