Eau de Toilette

Fresh, discreet, perfect for spraying generously even on clothes (always paying attention to more delicate fabrics like silk, though!): Eaux de Toilette are the ideal solution for everyday wear, for those who love to spray a lot of perfume but don't want to overpower their desk neighbor, or for warmer seasons when an Extrait de Parfum or an Eau de Parfum might be too intense and overwhelming.

What is an Eau de Toilette?

When it comes to fragrances, it's not enough to consider the olfactory family, but you also need to take into account the percentage of raw materials present in the fragrance: the difference in percentage allows us to distinguish between Extrait de Parfum (P)Eau de Parfum (EDP)Eau de Toilette (EDT) and Eau de Cologne (EDC). Eau de Toilette is one of the most wearable types of fragrances in terms of intensity (which doesn't mean it disappears!): characterized by a concentration of essential oils ranging from 5 to 15%, it has a duration of 2 to 3 hours. The lower percentage of oils makes the EDT more wearable and delicate, without, however, this discretion translating into absence: it's certain that to maintain its effect, it will require reapplication throughout the day (a gesture that can become a small ritual to take a break!). In EDTs, the perfume creator emphasizes the top notes to underline vivacity, choosing from their olfactory palette sparkling notes like citrus, marine notes in all their nuances, or aromatic notes. The composition is therefore dominated by the top notes, which then give way to a delicate trail and the heart and base notes.

What to keep in mind when buying an Eau de Toilette?

When choosing a perfume, it's good to keep in mind some fundamental elements to orient yourself in the choice. Here are our tips for always choosing the right fragrance:

  • Pay attention to the season. The performance of a perfume can change depending on the climate and temperature: choosing too intense olfactory notes during the summer, for example, can result in a headache or even bad odors (the fragrance, mixed with sweat and sunscreen, can drastically change compared to the initial performance!). Therefore, prefer olfactory notes suitable for the season or, at least, included in an olfactory pyramid that helps to bring them out in the right way according to the climate. EDTs, for example, will be perfect for the warmer seasons, allowing you to not give up perfume even with higher temperatures. The same goes for fresh perfumes, which go well with the sultry heat of summer.
  • The only olfactory note that the perfumer can't predict is the skin. The pH of the skin can either completely inhibit or, on the contrary, enhance the performance of the type of fragrance worn. Oily skins, for example, are an excellent base for applying perfume, making it last longer. Dry or acidic skins, on the other hand, facilitate the evaporation of perfume.
  • Olfactory training. Not all noses are accustomed to recognizing smells in the same way: even to learn to grasp the facets of an olfactory pyramid, one must gradually develop a certain training. When approaching the choice of a fragrance, especially the first few times, it will be good, therefore, to orient yourself towards choosing a more linear and simple olfactory pyramid, in order to appreciate all its facets. Preferring an EDT, in these cases, can be very helpful to start discovering some olfactory notes, without the commitment and expertise that an EDP may require to be fully appreciated.
  • Consider individual olfactory notes. While it's true that the olfactory pyramid must be observed as a whole, it's also necessary to consider the intrinsic intensity of individual olfactory notes (an Oud will always be more intense than a Tiaré): even an EDT can be more or less intense depending on the predominant olfactory note.
  • Request a free sample. Reading an olfactory pyramid carefully can certainly help you choose the right fragrance, but nothing can replace trying it on your skin. Request a sample of the perfume you have chosen when you place your order on 50 ml: it will allow you to test it before opening the package and, therefore, potentially choose to return it.

When to choose an Eau de Toilette?

Choose an Eau de Toilette when you're trying to discover a new olfactory note or if you love to spray perfume generously. But not only that: prefer it with the arrival of warmer temperatures and also as a gift idea (it will be easier not to go wrong). It will be perfect as a daily fragrance, but also for traveling: don't forget to always carry a portable perfume atomizer to reapply the fragrance throughout the day.
