Stora Skuggan started as a DIY initiative by five versatile artists who were still design students at the time. After years of experimentation, the niche perfumery was officially launched in 2015. The fragrances, called "scented stories" are true conceptual projects, wearable artworks, and unique aesthetic objects. The creative process of Stora Skuggan is intuitive and based on instinctive decisions. Anna Barkne, one of the five co-founders, explains: "We usually circuit around a myth or a phenomenon that’s maybe real or not. These become like small worlds or universes that the scent grows in, like a tiny baby." The ultimate goal is to turn traditional perfumery on its head, especially the commercial kind: instead of describing their fragrances with very objective and concrete descriptions, which increasingly resemble those of the fashion world, Stora Skuggan prefers to use evocative storytelling that conveys the atmosphere the perfume can give, beyond its more technical aspects. At the heart of the brand are these mythical stories, conceptualized through the fragrances, creating a small and unique universe for each perfume.
