Perfumes: we answer all your questions to help you choose

When it comes to perfumes, it feels like navigating the open sea, guided only by a confused cloud of stars (forget GPS because there's no single route to follow!). Just as we must learn to read and decipher the bright points that will lead us home, the same must happen when buying a perfume: we must understand where we want to go and what is the right way to reach our destination.

How to choose a perfume?

It may seem like a trivial question, but whether you're buying for yourself or looking for a gift, it's not easy at all (we know!). To navigate through pages and pages of perfumes. But fear not: we have gathered some information that will help you select the perfect fragrance for you.

Let's talk about perfume intensity: what's the difference between Eau de Toilette and Eau de Parfum?

It's all (or almost) about... concentration! Yes indeed: the fundamental difference lies precisely in the concentration of the ingredients. This, at least, as a general rule: when it comes to perfumes, other factors also come into play, such as intrinsic intensity (Oud will always be more persistent than Tiaré) or the quality of the ingredient in question.

As a general rule, however, remember that:

  • Extrait de Parfum (P). Concentration of essential oils: 20-30%. This is the most persistent type of perfume with an average duration of 6 to 8 hours.
  • Eau de Parfum (EDP). Concentration of essential oils: 15-20%. Definitely one of the best-selling types of perfume: average persistence of 5 hours.
  • Eau de Toilette (EDT). Concentration of essential oils: 5-15%. Lighter, ideal for warm seasons or for those who can't stand overly intense perfumes. Lasts about 3 hours.
  • Eau de Cologne (EDC). Concentration of essential oils: 2-4%. Duration: about 2 hours.

Women's perfumes or men's perfumes?

Let's start with a fundamental premise: clear distinctions are always approximations. The world of perfumery is too special, subjective, and rich to be divided into stagnant compartments. It's better to keep an open mind and let yourself be guided by what you really like, rather than refrain from trying something just because it's classified as "for men" or "for women."

However, a review of the fundamental distinctions can be helpful in making a choice. Let's start from the basics: in perfumery, we generally talk about women's perfumes, men's perfumes, children's perfumes, and unisex, and each of these categories has specific characteristics:

  • Women's Perfumes: characterized by floral notes and fragrances, such as jasmine, rose, orange blossom, or lily of the valley. Fragrances with fruity, chypre, vanilla, or spicy notes are also common.
  • Men's Perfumes: generally characterized by more intense woody notes, accompanied by citrus and spices. Lavender, oriental components (e.g., amber), leather, or tobacco are also frequent ingredients.
  • Unisex Perfumes: universal fragrances for both men and women. Unisex perfumes are often distinguished by strong citrus components, but also woody or aquatic notes, or finally, aquatic and green notes.
  • Children's Perfumes: often characterized by sweet notes of candy, chewing gum, cola, caramel, and fruit. These notes can also be combined with floral or coconut notes.

Perfume Composition: What is an Olfactory Pyramid?

Have you ever wondered why perfumes change on your skin within a few minutes after application and then throughout the day? The reason is simple: you have to imagine the composition of fragrances like the pyramid of Cheops: the bricks at the base have a different function and composition from those at the top!

Each part of the olfactory pyramid is fundamental for the final result of the perfume, but it has a different function and persistence, which is why, when choosing a fragrance, it is important to pay attention to its composition and identify the most persistent notes:

  • Top Notes: these are the ones we perceive as soon as the perfume is sprayed. Don't be fooled by the name: despite being the top of the fragrance, these notes evaporate after a few seconds or minutes, making way for the heart notes. Often, the top notes consist of citrus or herbal notes, capable of attracting your olfactory attention before taking a back seat. So when you choose a perfume, don't be attracted only by these notes because they are the least persistent of the pyramid!
  • Heart Notes: the heart of the perfume reveals itself after about 15 minutes from spraying and lasts for 2/3 hours. In the heart, we generally find flowers, fruity fragrances, spices, and green notes.
  • Base Notes (or base): perceptible after about half an hour from spraying the perfume, the base notes are then the most persistent and last several hours on the skin. Not surprisingly, the most frequent components in the base of fragrances are woody, musky, amber, but also oriental accords, such as incense or vanilla.

N.B! Most perfumes are built according to the scheme of the olfactory pyramid, but there are also linear fragrances that do not change over the hours: think of molecular compositions, for example, made up of a single (or two) ingredient(s) that blend perfectly with the skin's pH.

Types of perfumes: olfactory families

We like to call it "the Bible of perfumes": we are talking about the "Wheel of Fragrances" devised by Michael Edwards. It is one of the most authoritative classifications of olfactory families and subfamilies, extremely useful to start orienting yourself in the world of perfumes.

The four fundamental families are: floralorientalwoody and fresh.

They are further divided into subfamilies: e.g., delicate orientals, intense orientals, woody orientals, woody, musky, dry wood, aromatic, citrus, marine, green, fruity, intense florals, delicate florals, oriental florals. By using the filters on the 50 ml website, you can easily select the fundamental families and start narrowing down your search!

Do you have a favorite ingredient?

There are indeed very popular olfactory notes, such as jasmine, rose, iris, oud, vanilla, and violet, but even when you have a favorite ingredient in mind, you need to pay attention because the composition of perfumes plays a decisive role in bringing out certain olfactory notes more or less intensely: there is not just one rose, but hundreds of facets!

So how do you proceed? Read the olfactory pyramid carefully, paying attention to the position occupied by the ingredient you are interested in: if it is present at the base, it will probably be very perceptible and persistent. Also, observe the other ingredients: if there are very persistent notes in the base that risk overshadowing the one you are interested in, it is advisable to opt for another fragrance!

Now that I've found it: how do I test the perfume I've chosen?

No panic: we know that buying online is a challenge, but we are here precisely to make your purchasing experience effective, satisfying, and enjoyable. Help us to help you!

Let's start with some general rules on how to test the desired perfume:

  • Always try the perfume on your skin or on mouillettes. Trying perfumes on the skin of the wearer (be careful, therefore, not to try a perfume on yourself that you want to give as a gift!) is always the best solution to test them, in order to verify the reaction with the skin's pH. Alternatively, choose a neutral base such as cardboard or fabric mouillettes.
  • Don't stop at first impressions: niche perfumery requires calm. Always wait for the perfume to develop: let the top notes evaporate, wait for the heart, but above all the base notes, which will be the most persistent.
  • Don't try too many perfumes all at once. Trust us, it's not necessary and will only confuse you: better to go for a few, but good ones.
  • Ask for a sample. Don't worry, if you want to try a fragrance without the risk of blindly buying a 100 ml bottle, on 50 ml you can buy perfume samples online and do all the necessary tests comfortably at home! If, on the other hand, you're thinking of giving a gift and you're not sure if the fragrance will appeal to the recipient, along with the perfume order, request a sample in the notes of your order: we will include a sample of the fragrance you purchased, allowing you to have it tested by your loved ones before opening the package. This way, if you realize that it's not the right perfume for him/her, you can easily proceed with the return.

How to store perfume?

The two golden rules for keeping your perfume intact like the first day are: no humid places and no direct light. Contrary to common usage norms, the bathroom is not the ideal place to store your perfumes: it's better to opt for a dry place, at a stable temperature and not exposed to direct sunlight, such as a closet, a sheltered pantry, or the bedroom.

Where to apply perfume?

In this case too, talking about real rules would be a bit excessive, but, in fact, there are points on the body where you can wear perfume to enhance it at its best. All particularly warm areas, as they are irrigated by blood flow, will help your fragrance spread evenly. So choose the neck, wrists, inside of elbows or knees, behind the ears.

For an even more intense effect, we recommend applying a moisturizer (better yet, vaseline) on the points where you will then apply the perfume. For a more delicate effect, spray your fragrance in the air and walk through the perfume cloud. Also, try to intensify your perfume by matching creams, essential oils, or hair perfume with the same fragrance.

If your favorite perfume doesn't have a satisfactory duration, try carrying a rechargeable atomizer or a sample of the same fragrance with you to reapply it wherever necessary.

Perfumes for every occasion and every season

There are fragrances more suitable for a specific moment of the day or a particular season: this does not mean that you cannot choose to wear oud in August with forty degrees in the shade, but let's say that there are good rules that can be useful for you to always feel with the right fragrance at the right time (and save you some headache).

  • Daytime Perfumes: choose a more discreet and light fragrance (better if EDT or EDC), reapplying it as needed during the day. We recommend citrus or floral perfumes to play it safe.
  • Evening Perfumes: in the evening, you can play a little, opting for more intense and sensual fragrances (better if EDP). Apply them in strategic points and enjoy the fun.
  • Winter Perfumes: ideally more intense and sensual, often characterized by oriental, sweet/gourmand notes.
  • Autumn Perfumes: generally spicier, sweeter, and more intense. The olfactory notes that dominate autumn are vanilla, wood in all its shades.
  • Spring Perfumes: the fragrances of this season, as you can imagine, are inspired by the explosion of flowers that characterizes it with floral, light, and fresh notes.
  • Summer Perfumes: avoid overly intense fragrances (better an EDT!), which could give you a headache. Opt for light, fresh perfumes, such as citrus, aquatic, and green ones.
